POTENTIAL SIDE EFFECTS OF THE HENDRA VIRUS VACCINE

Equivac HeV Hendra Virus Vaccine for horses packaging - lists potential side effects, including:

  • swelling and soreness at the site of vaccination

  • increase in body temperature

  • lethargy

  • loss of appetite

  • muscle stiffness and swelling in the joints (oedema)

  • skin rashes (urticaria)

  • colic.

These symptoms are generally short-lived and are typical of many vaccines. As with all vaccines, side effect symptoms may vary in severity and on some occasions may require veterinary intervention.

THE APVMA ASSESSES EVERY ADVERSE EXPERIENCE REPORTED

Assessing an adverse experience

Reports made directly to the APVMA by non-registrants (voluntary reports) are copied to the product registration holder, who is then required to evaluate each report. The registration holder may contact the reporting person or the attending veterinarian to help determine if any follow-up work is required.

The product registration holder must subsequently report their findings to the APVMA, and the findings are then assessed to determine if further information is required. In some cases, additional expert opinion is sought from other government agencies such as the Office of Chemical Safety and the Department of the Environment, universities, the Australian Veterinary Association, or other appropriate authorities.

CLASSIFYING AN ADVERSE EXPERIENCE

The APVMA classifies the relationship between exposure to or use of a registered product and a reported adverse experience in terms of ‘probable’, ‘possible’, ‘probable or possible off-label’, ‘unlikely’ and ‘unknown’.

 WEB AUTHORS OPINION:

ARE SO MANY SERIOUS HORSE ILLNESSES FOLLOWING HENDRA VACCINATIONS SIMPLY COINCIDENCE OR REACTIONS?

Please tell me I haven’t interpreted the above statement taken directly from the APVMA website!

The APVMA assesses every adverse experience reported – after Zoetis has ‘filtered’ the information in the report and sent their findings back to the APVMA, then the APVMA filters it again. So exactly how much faith can be placed in these figures when they are firstly ‘filtered’ by Zoetis? This is not an independent assessment.

The Internet abounds with sites and social media pages dedicated to the Hendra Vaccination / Not to Vaccinate topic (many links provided here-in), along with alarming numbers of reports of side effects of the vaccination that range from minor to major. Just how many of these have been substantiated and reported is anyone’s guess. Those that have been officially reported on the official APVMA site have been put through a filter of probability and then the results are published. Link above.

There are a plethora of reports on the internet with one common factor – the horses were all recently vaccinated with the  Zoetis Equivac HeV  vaccination, most were apparently healthy at the time of vaccination, suggesting to me that this vaccine was not tested thoroughly enough.  Under the tight definition of a ‘side affect attributable to a vaccination’ many of these anecdotal ‘reactions’ do not qualify to be recorded as reactions on the official APVMA site. However, IMO there are far too many to be co-incidental despite the fact that many fell outside the vaccine ‘exclusion time zone’.

I personally believe that in all likelihood some of these horses possibly had some minor undetected

immunosuppression or metabolic issue that had not affect their outward health, performance or behaviour and was not picked up by the vet administering the vaccine. I wonder how many vets actually check the horse’s temperature, gums etc before administering the vaccine despite the clear labelling advice regarding horses health?   Some of these horses were champion animals, appearing healthy and happy until they were vaccinated. Some of these alleged ‘side effects’ have been so serious that there is a class action application before the Federal Court.

I do understand that where this vaccine has been administered clearly contrary to the product packaging instructions under contraindications - any alleged reactions cannot be considered. Such situations would include administration of this vaccine to diagnosed sick/ immunocompromised horses, the vaccine stored incorrectly or administered concurrent with other vaccines/medications or to breeding mares or foals as described. However the statements under ‘Precautions’ are so broad with so many unknowns that I personally  would have trouble trusting the safety of this product.  My research, though done by a ‘lay person’ and far from comprehensive leads me to believe that a large proportion of the testing and research was done on pigs, not horses. I question, was there enough research done on horses?

HAS THE APVMA’S REPORTING PROCESSES PLACED THE FOX IN CHARGE OF THE HEN HOUSE?

From my reading of their website information, my interpretation is YES!

I HAVE ASKED THE AUTHORITY – See the letter 21/8/2019. The answer will also be published here.

WHAT DO THE VETS  CLASSIFY AS A SIDE AFFECT?

Maitland Greencross large animal veterinarian Rod Starr said “it was important to keep in mind that illness 24 hours after the vaccination was potentially not a side-effect.”

“A side-effect is what happens 12 to 24 hours after the vaccine is given,” Dr Starr said.

ANECDOTAL EXAMPLES -  UNCONFIRMED REACTION REPORTS

OLYMPIC RIDER HEATH RYAN STOPS IMMUNISING FOR HENDRA VIRUS AUGUST 27 2015 -

Heath Ryan – Olympian Heath Ryan, from Raymond Terrace, initially vaccinated all his 300 horses, an exercise that cost $80,000 to $90,000 each round of immunisations.

Immunisation consists of the initial dose, followed six weeks later by another dose, then biannually for the rest of the horse’s life.

Ryan has stopped immunising because he said the vaccinations were wicked.

He said the vaccine resulted in his horses experiencing significant side effects, including raised temperatures, inability to eat, severe swelling around the injection site and inability to put their necks down, which can be fatal.

“We experienced very unpleasant reactions, raised temperatures, suffering at the site of injection and couldn’t put their necks down,” Ryan said.

“Horses have died, horses haven’t been able to go [compete] again, and the Hendra vaccination has caused that reaction.

“If you do it [vaccinate] to a stallion it could affect their sperm, which will affect people’s livelihood.”

“These horses probably had pre-existing conditions.”

He said owners would probably not even notice these pre-existing conditions because they would not normally affect the horse.

Gail Hunter  - Australian champion and active member of Hunter Valley Show Jumping Club

“We had three horses with severe reactions ... very swollen necks, couldn’t walk or eat for about three to five days,” Hunter said.

Champion  horse, Oh I Say, was severely affected and went from jumping 1.4 metres to unco-ordinated and fell over small jumps, “Her winning showjumping career ended, for she couldn’t jump any more,”

Vicki Roycroft, a six-time Olympic equestrian rider, has seen many of these side effects first-hand, however, and believes that can be more severe than Zoetis describes.

“I knew a horse who, after the first injection, was so swollen that it couldn’t feed in the paddock for a week. I understand a bit of a sore neck and swelling, but if a horse can’t put their head down to feed, that’s not right,” she says.

She’s also seen more severe reactions develop after subsequent boosters. “A neighbour’s horse had a reaction the first time she gave him the vaccine, so she decided to inject it into his chest the next time. The next day he developed laminitis problems. I’ve also seen horses getting really sick and horses are dying after the vaccine. Of course, the two could be unrelated, but there are too many coincidences.”

Cedar Vale horse owner Helen Cole said she has been  unable to ride her horse since it was vaccinated at the start of the year.“His nature completely changed, he became bad-tempered and temperamental,” she said. Ms Cole said the 10-year-old stallion had been healthy before receiving the vaccine.

HENDRA VACCINE REACTION! GOLD COAST QLD

I thought it’s time I write a post for people to share far and wide about my story and positive reaction to the Hendra vaccine.

On the 17th May 2019 my daughters super pony had her first Hendra vaccine. Within 48 hours she started showing some symptoms and within 60 hours she was unable to walk.

Skip to today, 5 weeks down the track we have had bloods, tests, x-rays, constant vet visits, stable confinement, exhausted mum, drugs and the most of all a devastated little girl!

Our pony still struggles to walk now due to laminitis

The tragic stories continue. These two horses were Hendra vaccinated at the same time on the same property. Within days of vaccination symptoms included swollen throat, stiffness in legs and unable to stand. The second vaccination three weeks later compounded the symptoms with severe neurological responses as shown in videos. NSW DPI did extensive testing with the costs covered by the DPI without any conclusive results. Both horses were euthanised on humane grounds.........

CHAMPS GROUP  POST - July 19 2019 ·   WHY WON'T THEY JUST VACCINATE?

It should be noted that pyrexia induced laminitis has been diagnosed in dozens of horses after vaccination with the Hendra vaccine (HeV) and is on the APVMA list of adverse reactions.

Also adverse events do not always occur with 24-48 hours of vaccinations and this is well documented by many veterinarians. Just not the ones dealing with Hendra vaccinations

QUEENSLAND PARLIAMENT SPEAKER PETER WELLINGTON CALLS FOR INQUIRY ON EFFECTS OF HENDRA VACCINE  18 December 2015

Concern among horse owners that the Hendra vaccine has major side effects including death has been mounting, despite authorities and the drug manufacturer disputing the claims.

Speaking to ABC Rural, the vocal Sunshine Coast MP said he would write to the Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk on Friday to establish the inquiry.

"There is a lot of evidence I have received from people saying there is a connection between the Hendra vaccine and the death or serious illness of their horses," Mr Wellington said.

"Unfortunately the authorities, as I understand, are pooh-poohing (sic) the incidents and say there is no pressing problem with the vaccine.
