 WEB AUTHORS OPINION :

Equestrian Australia has been mired in controversy for many years, not the least of which was their short-lived Zoetis sponsorship partnership and their almost as short-lived requirement for members horses to be Hendra vaccinated to compete at official E.A. Events. Many of the base branch members felt that the combination of these two moves by Equestrian Australia demonstrated a conflict of interest and a complete disdain for their members. This major faux-pas existed in a climate where member’s horses were reporting reactions to the vaccination and a class action against Zoetis was being mounted.

In early 2014, Equestrian Australia announced from July, horses would not be allowed to compete unless they had been vaccinated. Equestrian Australia introduced a by-law in July 2014, which meant horses could not compete unless they had been vaccinated. EA revoked the by-law on February 2, 2015.

EQUESTRIAN AUSTRALIA AND ZOETIS END PARTNERSHIP AFTER MEMBER COMPLAINT- 04/11/2018

CLASS ACTION AGAINST ZOETIS OVER HENDRA VACCINATION

A barrage of complaints from EA members was sent to the federation, attacking the major conflict of interest as well as pin pointing the class action suit against Zoetis.  EA members and state branches were not aware of this EA's partnership with Zoetis until it was announced.

Members raised considerable concern due to the ethics of the partnership in lieu of the recent $53 million class action against Zoetis due to equine reactions and deaths after vaccinations of the Zoetis Hendra Vaccination. Half a million doses have been administered to horses across Australia since 2012 and about 1,500 horses have experienced adverse reactions and have not been able to return to their regular work.

Lawyer John Rowe said Zoetis failed to inform horse owners of the potential side effects and have breached the Agricultural and Veterinary Chemicals Act by failing to properly trial and test the vaccine before its release.

The Hendra virus has killed 103 horses and four people across 60 separate outbreaks in QLD and NSW.

SPONSORSHIP ROW OVER ZOETIS DEAL ERUPTS AT EQUESTRIAN AUSTRALIA - April 16, 2018

Equestrian Australia announced on Wednesday it had severed the contract with Zoetis, the world’s largest producer of medicines for pets and livestock, including the vaccine for the deadly Hendra virus, following widespread opposition from its membership, as well as four of the six state equestrian branches.

A number of EA members have launched a $53m class action in the Federal Court against Zoetis for the sometimes debilitating or fatal side effects of the Hendra virus vaccine.

The legal action alleges that Zoetis failed to properly trial and test its Equivac HeV (Hendra) vaccine before it was administered to horses Australia.
